Flooring design to enhance your room renovation
We take on room renovation projects for many reasons: to use the space differently, to completely overhaul the design scheme, to bring a room back to its original state, or to introduce features that will make us love a room even more.
Home renovation has seen an increase in the past couple of years as homeowners are looking to rework spaces to create more comfortable home-working areas. Living rooms, guest rooms and kitchens have been the most likely recipients of a revamp, but there’s also been an increase in homeowners looking to rework spaces to create more comfortable home-working areas.
Alongside walls, ceilings, lighting and furnishings, flooring is one of the big decisions with a renovation journey. It can add so much to both the aesthetics and the function of a room, and there are plenty of ways to be inspired and create bespoke floors that enhance your individual renovation.
The renovation journey
Much of a renovation project takes in the practical aspects of what needs to change. This can include whether radiators, electrical sockets or light fittings and switches need to move; whether the new curtains or blinds will be fixed in the same way or new fixings are required; and whether any cabling needs chasing into the walls before the walls are freshly plastered.
If you’re stripping a room right back then you get to see the space for what it is and start afresh – this is ideal for new flooring. For example, with skirting boards off, a new floor screed can be laid in preparation for installing luxury vinyl tile (LVT). And if you’re considering underfloor heating, this will need to be planned in before screeding.
These decisions are all part of the overall renovation journey and need to be taken alongside the interior design side of things. While visualising the overall room, think about how the space could be used differently, what problems you want to overcome and how you’d like to zone any open-plan areas while keeping a cohesive feel.
Think about flooring early on
Flooring fits in perfectly at the ideas and visualisation stage because it can significantly change the way a room looks. So there’s a lot to think about…
If you’re opening up two rooms into a large space, would you like the flooring to flow all the way through or could a bespoke floor design help to create contrast between the different spaces?
Will your new room theme be driven by key pieces of furniture or wallpaper design, meaning that your flooring needs to be a neutral and complementary backdrop? Or could LVT flooring be the feature that draws you into the room and completes the design with clever use of laying patterns, colour and finish?
And if the room will be multi-use – home office during the week; guest bedroom at the weekend, for example – it’ll be important to go for an easy-to-clean option that offers both durability and style.
